Geriatric Medicine: Awards

Dr. Sim Fai Liu Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence in Geriatric Medicine

This award is presented annually to an undergraduate medical student who has demonstrated interest and clinical excellence in geriatrics.

Application:

  1. Candidates must outline reasons for pursuing a geriatrics-related career and examples of clinical experiences to support this goal (maximum 250 words).
  2. Curriculum Vitae.
  3. One letter of support from a clinical supervisor attesting to the student's clinical excellence and qualities: collaboration, compassion, communication, commitment.
Criteria Description Points

1. Commitment Evidence of commitment to pursue a career in geriatrics  
2. Collaboration Demonstrates respectful collaboration with the interprofessional team and referral source  
3. Compassion Provides compassionate care for older adults and their caregivers  
4. Clinical Excellence in obtaining the history, performing the examination, interpreting investigations, and prioritizing the management plan in clinical complexity  
5. Communication Communicates clearly in written and oral form  

The Dr. Sim Fai Liu award is presented annually during the Divisional Barbeque in July.  Applications are due on May 3rd, 2024 at 23:59 EST. Please send the application to:

Summer Older Adult Research (SOAR) Experienced Award 2024

The division of geriatric medicine values high-quality research and scholarly activities of a diverse nature.  This includes epidemiological research, health services research, quality improvement and innovation, and evaluation of educational initiatives.  The division is also committed to educating and inspiring an interest in scholarly endeavours and most importantly a passion and interest in healthcare for older adults. 

The goals of the summer student scholar program are to:

  1. support student involvement in scholarly activity
  2. create a network for collaborative learning and enhanced knowledge exchange
  3. foster a passion for the care of older adults

Summer studentships typically run from May to September of each year. To be eligible, interested students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine undergraduate MD program.
  • Able to commit 10 –12 weeks to the studentship.

In addition to the application form, please submit a letter of intent describing why you are interested in the SOAR Experience and what you hope to gain, CV, and transcripts to geriatric.medicine@utoronto.ca by February 16th, 2024.

Each student will receive a funding of $8,000 per summer (10–12 weeks commitment to project)

Students will have the opportunity to rank projects of their interest at one of the following sites, Baycrest, St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook, University Health Network/Sinai Hospital, and Women’s College Hospital.

  • Participate in summer scholar showcase
  • Acknowledge funding in presentations and publications.

The Barry J. Goldlist Teacher of the Year Award

This award is presented annually to a division member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching in the postgraduate program by the current year’s resident cohort.
